James La Bella is a writer-dramaturg based in Brooklyn and New England. He currently works as a deputy literary wrangler at Clubbed Thumb and a dramaturg at The Civilians. He is an MFA Playwriting candidate at Brown University.

James’ writing has recently been seen onstage with The Civilians, Joe’s Pub, NYU Skirball, The Prelude Festival, PS21, Life World, WNYC’s Green Space, The Brick, The Tank, Art Cafe + Bar, Sparkhaven Theater, Reground Theatre, NYSAF’s Powerhouse Theater, The Blank Theater, Arts Garage Inc, Mercutio Troupe, Candle House Collective, and Emerson Stage, and in print in The Washington Square Review, McSweeney’s, Motif Magazine, The Maine Review, Emerge, The Civilians’ Extended Play, and Broadway Beat.

James is a 2023 Lambda Playwriting Fellow and a member of the 2023/24 Civilians R&D Group. Other recognitions include the Rod Parker Playwriting Fellowship, Betsy Carpenter Playwriting Award, EVVY Award for Best Writing for the Stage. He has been a finalist for the INKubator New Play Program and New Roots artists’ residency and a semi-finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival and Ars Nova’s ANT Fest.

James has done literary and dramaturgical work with Playwrights Horizons, The Civilians, Clubbed Thumb, Fake Friends, New Georges, The Mercury Store, NYSAF’s Powerhouse Theater, Goodspeed Opera House, New Repertory Theater, The Kraine, Guerilla Opera, Hedgepig Ensemble, PlayPenn, Fresh Ink Theater, and the Bay Area Playwrights Festival.
